Natural Dog Supplements and What They Contain

Natural Dog Supplements and What They Contain

There are many natural dog supplements on the market today, with many different ingredients. We will run through a different one each week, as its so important to have an understanding of what we are feeding our dogs.

Bromelain is one of the ingredients used in the Winston's Joint System.

Bromelain is an anti-inflammatory enzyme that comes from the pineapple plant and is one of a group of enzyme products that digest proteins. It has absorption capabilities and has a stimulating effect on the development of plasmin, which contributes to tissue healing in your dog. Bromelain also inhibits some of the precursors to the coagulation process. There are numerous other benefits of Bromelain use for your dog. Some of the health issues that Bromelain will aid in are arthritis, allergies, digestive disorders and congestion, just to name a few.

Because of its anti-inflammatory capabilities, bromelain is considered useful in healing many wounds, sprains, pain, swelling, bruising and muscle damage. It also has the ability for managing the morning stiffness and joint swelling of rheumatoid arthritis. If your dog gets an injury, plasma kinin levels elevate, which leads to the formation of fibrin, contributing to inflammation and swelling. Bromelain helps break down kinin and fibrin, helping to manage the degree of inflammatory discomfort.

Bromelain is a natural antihistamine, which digests the histamine molecule. Histamine causes allergies and bromelain can help your dog with the relief of some of the common allergy symptoms.

Bromelain can help your dog with any digestive problems. It is a proteolytic enzyme, which has the ability to break down proteins. Most orally ingested enzymes are destroyed by the digestive juices in your dog's system prior to being absorbed but significant amounts of bromelain work as a successful digestive aid, as it can be absorbed intact.

Bromelain's mucolytic action allows it to thin out mucus, helping with drainage and congestion problems of the sinuses and airways of the lungs. It also helps with symptoms of asthma and bronchitis.

Bromelain, when used with another enzyme called trypsin, along with antibiotics, may reduce the symptoms of a urinary tract infection. It also works as a blood thinner and reduces indications of angina and thrombophlebitis. Additionally, bromelain is said to be relatively safe as a natural supplement with no toxicity. Some side effects might be diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, stomach problems, increased heart rate and irritation of mucus membranes. If you notice any of these side effects in your dog while on bromelain, discontinue use and contact your veterinarian immediately. Some veterinarians may advise against the use of bromelain while your dog is on any antibiotics, anti-cancer drugs and blood thinners due to possible risks in combining these medications. As always, your doctor will discuss the best solutions to meet your needs and that of your pet.

So its easy to see why Bromelain is such a great natural product, and why is is used in natural dog supplements as well as by many people for their healing qualities.
