If you are looking for a powerful natural anti-inflammatory for dogs, one that is fast working with no adverse side effects, read about our Flexerna supplement and how it can help your dog.
How it works
The Green-Lipped Mussel (Perna canaliculus) is a species, which is only found in the pristine waters of the New Zealand coastline, primarily in the central and northern region of the country. For centuries the indigenous coastal people of New Zealand called -the Maori- have made these mussels a staple in their diet. In doing so they have become less susceptible to inflammatory diseases, such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, to name a few.
Though their benefits have been widely known for years, the Green-Lipped Mussel recently has gained tremendous attention, in particular the extracted oil from these mussels, due to its unique combination of fatty acids that can not be found in any other mussel, or marine life for that matter.
Today they are grown and harvested in a marine farming process called aquaculture. This farming is 100% environmentally friendly and fiercely controlled and regulated by the New Zealand Fishing Industry. From inception the goal has been to create a sustainable industry without negative impact to the environment.
The Green-Lipped Mussels are grown on ropes that run deep into the waters. This process is called longline farming, where the ropes extend from the surface all the way down to the ocean floor. Like other mussels, the Green-Lipped Mussels get their nutrients feeding on phytoplankton, which have been shown to be rich in antioxidants. Yet is it the specific environment and ecosystem unique to these waters off the coast of New Zealand that make these phytoplankton different from all the rest and often referred to as "superfood" because of their increased exposure to sunlight.
Their modern day discovery started in the 1960's when NASA was investigating various reported "superfoods" across the globe. Over the years extensive research has been performed by government, educational institutions and private companies, investigating the comprehensive benefits of these mussels. One thing is for sure; unanimously these species of mussels, due to their environment, contain an extraordinary combination of fatty acids not found in any other mussel or any other marine life. It is these fatty acids that are of greatest interest.
Yet there was one major problem. They discovered that the mussels were very vulnerable to heat and oxidation degradation, therefore a tremendous amount of time and energy was placed on improving the handling, processing and extraction processes. Traditionally these mussels prepared for food supplements were freeze-dried which involves a series of heating and freezing cycles over 24-48 hours, yet this drastically reduces the concentration of the valuable lipids in the product.
What is Flexerna Omega?
Veterinarians and pet owners have long understood the benefits of Omega 3 fatty acids. Over the years the market has been flooded with a number of fish oil capsules claiming high levels of the omega 3s eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). But now there is an omega fatty acid supplement that is far more powerful when if comes to supporting joint mobility. That product is Flexerna Omega, a patented formulation, providing a concentrated purified extracted oil from the Green Lipped Mussel of New Zealand (Perna canaliculus).
The Flexerna Omega Difference is Eicosatetraenoic Acid (ETA)?
Flexerna Omega is the only patented omega fatty acid supplement proven to have effective levels of the three main Omega 3 fatty acids shown to be beneficial in supporting overall joint health. Flexerna Omega is also the only green-lipped mussel extract with a patented extraction process to optimize purity and concentration.
What sets Flexerna apart from fish oils is the omega 3, eicosatetraenoic acid (ETA). Research studies have shown that ETA is more powerful than EPA and DHA combined.
Flexerna Omega Benefit
- Helps support joint mobility
- Helps support cardiovascular function
- Helps support respiratory health
- Slow onset of action but long lasting effects
- No adverse side effects
- Does not affect blood platelet aggregation as is the case for fish oils and other omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids
Who Benefits?
Puppies to Older Dogs can benefit from Flexerna Omega. Being proactive in preventing problems is the best thing to do.

Ingredients
Arachidonic acid is:
- polyunstarurated fatty acid found in cell membranes.
- considered an essential Omega 6 fatty acid, therefore it is needed in diet
- is involved in cell signaling and also is a key inflammatory intermediate.
- most AA sources for human body come from meat, eggs or dairy or is synthesized from linoleic acid
- important to understand AA works a both anti-inflam and inflam.
Flexerna has been shown to contain high levels of a lipid, a long chain fatty acid (20 + fatty acid residues) called Eicosatetraenoic Acid (ETA). This omega three has been show to be stronger than EPA and DHA alone.
Extracted oil comprises a combination of over 12 omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and anti-oxidants (mostly carotenoids)
How to Use
Whether your dog has or has not previously been on a Omega supplement, TopDog recommends a proper loading dose phase for Flexerna Omega. Therefore, in the first 10 days the maintenance dosage is doubled.
