My Dog has Pug Myelopathy
What Should I Do?
In January we noticed Summer our pug was showing weakness in her back legs, it was harder for her to get out of bed and she was struggling on her walks. We took her to the vets where she was X-rays and we were told she had Pug Myelopathy. We were given the option to have spinal surgery but due to Summers age, how restricted the recovery would be and the fact the surgery may not even be successful we chose against it.
Summer was prescribed regular painkillers and anti-inflammatory steroids which worked really well, she was able to live a very normal life for over 4 years! However the last 6 months of her life unfortunately went rapidly downhill, she lost so much muscle mass that she could barely use her back legs so we purchased a pet stroller. She would have a little wander around as she still loved to sniff everything in sight but was extremely wobbly.
We then came across your site, I'll be honest I was always so sceptical about dog wheelchairs, but looking back I can honestly say it was the best decision we ever made for Summer. As soon as we put her in the wheels she took to them instantly, she just zoomed off! I had to put a lead on her because I couldn't keep up! She would take the corners in the garden too quickly and I would find her lying on her side waiting for me to pick her back up, she had me in stitches!
Unfortunately, Summer then developed a breathing issue and we made the difficult decision to have her put to sleep. We will remember Summer as such an amazing happy character who loved her life, she loved her long sniffs, full face to the ground, and was able to do that until the very end thanks to her wheels!
