Questions & Answers

Have a Question?

Ask a Question
  • I have seen a couple of the reviews that mention that the harness is heavy. How much does the Medium weigh?

Hi Zoe, We have just weighed the medium harness. It is 660 grams exactly 😊

  • The rear of the harness how does a male dog wee because it looks like the harness goes over his bits

The support straps between your dog’s hind legs are held apart by their tail, giving full clearance for defecation. Both male and female dogs can comfortably urinate with the Conventional Hip Lift without issue. For those male dogs whose penis is further back between their hind legs, we recommend the U-Band Hip Lift.

  • Can I use the rear part of the harness on its own?

The Help Em Up Harness is designed to be a full body harness.  No the rear part of the harness (the Hip Lift) can't be used on its own. It needs to be connected to the front part of the harness to stay in place, otherwise it might slip off and cause an injury. The front part of the harness can be used on its own.

  • My dog is a rear amputee. Can she still use the Help Em Up Harness?

Yes. Help Em Up Harnesses can be adapted for both front AND rear amputee tri-paw dogs. You will need to get the Tripawd Support Anti-Rotation Device and add it to the harness to convert it.

  • My dog is 14 and he has osteoarthritis in his hind legs. He struggles to lay down and get up. His hind legs don't bend while he walks and he can't walk backwards and isn't stable (usually uses a wall/sofa to lean on while walking). We'd like to find something that gives him more support.

We recommend the Help Em Up Harness, it provides excellent full-body support for dogs with osteoarthritis. They can wear the harness all day in the house or on walks; you can use the handles on the shoulder and the rump to help them up and down, in and out of the car.

Sizing: Considerations & Exceptions

Total Weight

In most cases, your dog’s total weight will determine what size they need. Tip: If your dog’s weight is between sizes, we recommend sizing down.

Age/Condition

For older dogs that may be struggling with muscle wastage or degenerative hind legs, sizing down the harness rear may be needed to achieve an optimal fit. You can always get a smaller rear harness here.

Tip: Consider where your dog’s total weight falls within a size range. If your dog weighs at the lower end, a smaller rear harness might help - a 25kg dog with a degenerative hind may benefit from a small size rear, while a 34kg dog with similar build would do well with a full medium.

Breed

Occasionally, some barrel-chested breeds may require a larger harness front in order to achieve an optimal fit. If your barrel-chested dog’s total weight is between sizes, a larger front harness here - size up the front and size down the rear.

For In Between Sizes

Top Tip: If a dog is on the cusp of two different sizes, the recommendation is to size down a harness size e.g. a 35kg Labrador would likely wear a medium, and a 52kg Husky would like wear a large - but you’d double check measurements.

Male dogs

For most male dogs, the conventional harness fits in front of the hind legs, behind the penis. The whole penis shown here is further forward of the hind legs. You need about 1-2 inches of space behind the penis in front of the hind legs for the conventional band (the sold belly band to fit)

Otherwise, if your dog’s one of the 20 - 25% who have the tip of their penis starting further back between their legs, he’ll need the U-Band shape.

The U-Band Male Help Em Up harness is here.

This provides an easy opening so they can urinate freely. (see picture - the penis is between or even with the front of the hind legs).

Help ‘Em Up Harness

The Help ‘Em Up Harness is a unique full-body lifting device that assists owners with aging dogs to remain active when arthritis, hip dysplasia, muscle loss, or surgical repair impairs a pet’s mobility and physical strength for everyday functions – from getting up off the floor, up and down the stairs, or in and out of cars.

Veterinarians, neurologists, and nurses use the harness for dogs rehabilitating after surgery or recovering from injuries. By placing a handle over the hips and the shoulders, the Help ‘Em Up harness safely lifts from underneath the torso, allowing you to help your dog get up and overcome the daily obstacles of aging and getting around.

Our harness will also help you lift without stress by using the built-in handles, as the Help ‘Em Up harness is designed to distribute weight over the large support surfaces of the chest and hind quarters. Veterinarians, surgeons, nurses, and rehab therapists find our product to be a useful aid in helping their patients be lifted more comfortably post-surgery and rehabilitated more easily.

Can my dog wee wearing the dog harness?

Yes! Neither males or females have problems defecating with the dog harness – as the support straps that come up between their hind legs are held apart by the dogs tail, giving consistent clearance for defecation. Female dogs have no urinating issues for the same reason. Most male dogs can use the conventional harness without issue, as their penis generally will come out in front of the belly band – giving them good clearance to urinate. However, for those male dogs whose penis starts further back, between their hind legs, the tip of their penis may be partially covered by the belly band. For them we have a male version that provides a cutout for penis clearance.

Is my dog lifting harness washable?

Yes, all of our dog lifting harnesses can be machine or hand washed – but we recommend air drying. Dryers tend to dry out the neoprene over time. We do not recommend the use of bleach or other harsh detergents but mild soaps work great. Urine odor can be a problem so try to clean regularly and white vinegar and water in a 1 to 3 percentage works pretty well to cut the smell. There are also commercial cleaners available that can help to cut odor. Ask your favourite pet supplier for recommendations.

How long can I leave the Help ’Em Up harness on my dog?

It can be worn for extended periods; however, we suggest that you give your dog breaks from wearing it. Let them sleep without it if possible or if you have a dog that needs a potty trip at 3am, take it off after they return. Also, watch for them chewing on it when left alone. If you are leaving it on for extended periods, please check for hot spots and overheating as it can become uncomfortable for your dog if left on for too long a time.

Help em

I think it will be of great help to my MD Jessie, she is not quite ready for it yet as she still has some use of back legs. Once I worked it out !!! It adjusts and fits quite well.

Help Em Up Harness

This harness is a great help for lifting our dog with a spinal injury. Once she is positioned well the harness helps to keep her supported whilst she is encouraged to relearn the process of walking. At present the harness needs two persons working together but in time I'm hoping the straps/lead attachment will work well with one person using the harness.

Has opened up the world again for our 15 year old lab/golden cross

Our 15 year old retired guide dog, who we adopted nearly 6 years ago when his owner passed away, has naturally slowed down, and even more markedly so over the last few months. However he still enjoys hydrotherapy swimming, and on occasions a walk in the woods. The problem has been that both require trasnport by car, and having progressed through a series of different platforms and steps to get into the car, things were becoming more and more difficult. Of late, he was becoming distressed at the though of climbing in and out. Additionally, he sometimes stumbled walking up the shallow from the pool after his swim. This was worrying as we could see the two things he still really enjoyed would be difficult for him to continue with.

The Help Em Up Harness was recommended to us by the Hydrotherapist, and although we were advised it may be more expensive than some harnesses, we read the reviews and based on those and the Hydrotherapist's recommendation, we went ahead and bought it.

The harness arrived in just 2 days - in time for the next swimming day too! We were a bit daunted by what seemed to be a complex structure, but in fact this was a misread on our part. In fact, after straightening out the harness and looking through the set of instructions, it was very easy to fit, especially after we'd properly adjusted the straps to fit.

Our dog was fine with the harness - after all as an ex-guide dog he was used to having harnesses. And we couldn't be happier. He gets in and out of the car without fear, and the same with getting out of the pool. In fact, we find we don;t really need to hold the harness up that much. It's not so much lifting him, but giving him support, and through the harness this can be minimal but enough - much better than any other help we've tried.

I thoroughly recommend the Help Em Up Harness to anyone considering it.

Excellent

The harness was delivered quickly and the service was brilliant. The harness size I went for was a medium and what I really like is that our elderly Springer is very long so struggled to get one to fit his length but this ticks all the boxes as it is easily adjustable. My boy weighs around 27 kg. It is actually very easy to adjust and put on/ take off despite our dog being a bit of a fidget. - once you get the adjustment correct it is really easy to use. I debated the rear harness with the u piece but recommend you just watch the video on the website - we went for the normal band for our male dog and he is able to go to the bathroom on his walks easily without soiling the harness - I would definitely recommend great product 😊

Excellent concept but some issues

Really good but sizing is completely wrong, ordered Large for my 47kg GSD and it is way too big. Once adjusted lots of spare strapping, works well but the Medium is alot cheaper and would have been fine as even though size chart doesnt go up to her weight the materials are the same so a bit misleading.. The extra lift straps spoil the deal as they are too short and massively overpriced.
I would send back but needed urgently and only used twice before my dog crossed the rainbow bridge.
