My Dog Has Bad Arthritis
Would a Dog Wheelchair Help?
As dogs can’t lie down in their wheelchair, we recommend you use the dog wheelchair only for exercise. This can include in the house or outside in the garden or on walks.
It is important to notice if your dog is getting tired and to take them out of their wheelchair so they can rest.
When you first get your dog a wheelchair, it might be the first time in a while that they’ve done this much exercise. It’s therefore really important to keep an eye on them and let them have time outside of the wheelchair. Ideally your dog will start with shorter sessions in the wheelchair, building up muscle strength and stamina over the first few weeks. Keep a close eye on how they are behaving so you can give them a rest when needed.
As a rule of thumb your dog should never be in their wheelchair for more than an hour. Ideally, wheelchair sessions will last between 15 minutes and an hour a few times a day, with lots of rest periods in between. It can be incredibly exciting for your dog to be mobile again, so you want to monitor activity levels and prevent overexercising.
