My Dog has Degenerative Myelopathy
What Should I Do?
Raser has had issues with his rear legs since he was 5 years old (now almost 10), this included weakness and loss of coordination. When he was taken to the vet to have this checked, after a visual examination the vet advised his owner to keep a close eye on him.
On another visit to the vet they thought Raser could have hip dysplasia, but then it was confirmed he had all of the symptoms that led to him being diagnosed with Degenerative Myelopathy. Because of this, Raser suffers with paw knuckling on his rear paws. One day his owners noticed there was blood on the floor due to the paws scraping on the ground so they wanted to do something to stop this from happening.
Their vet recommended getting Raser some boots, and that's when they purchased Maximus PawsUp anti-knuckling boots. Raser is very patient whilst having his boots put on, the first few times were a challenge (to say the least), but now Raser and his owner work together and it takes a minute or two. All in all, these boots make a difference to Raser’s gait.
This diagnosis really hasn't slowed Raser down; he still loves his walks and ball chasing just as much. His owner believes that continuing to keep Raser active through physical therapy and walking, keeping his muscles as healthy and as active as possible, has slowed down the progression of the disease.
